31 Awesome Bible Truths...People, Angels, God

John the Baptist Publicly Doubts Jesus is Really God’s Son

How about that for a front page headline? Shocked spectators look on wondering what Jesus will say.

“And it came about that when Jesus had finished giving instructions to His twelve disciples He departed from there to teach and preach in their cities. Now when John was in prison he heard the words of Christ, he sent word by his disciples, and said to Him, “Are you the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?”

Matthew 11:1-3

Have you ever questioned if God is real? Is Jesus really who He says He is? Will God actually do what He says He will? Is the Bible REALLY true? If you are breathing and honest, the answer is, “Yes”. Everyone at some point has questioned if God is who He says He is; if it is all really true. It is completely natural. Part of growing in our faith involves having questions. We need to ask questions for ourselves. Asking leads us to seek answers. Seeking leads to discovery. Discovering for ourselves leads to strengthening what we believe. When we see the answers to our questions we take ownership in what we find. Now, we are not accepting someone else’s answers, we have our own answers. It becomes OUR faith. Standing on our own faith is stronger than resting on someone else’s.

John was just like you and me; he came to a point of uncertainty in what he thought he believed. From a human perspective, it was a pretty big deal for John to be so open and honest about his doubts. First of all, John was a cousin of Jesus. He grew up with Jesus. John knew the prophecy about his own role in life; John was to be the one to lead the way for Jesus. I am sure he heard the story many times how the angel Gabriel visited both his mother Elizabeth and Jesus mother Mary before their births. As John grew up, he wholeheartedly believed all that was told to him and he devoted his life to what he believed. Years were spent telling others Jesus is God’s son. Jesus has come to earth to save the people. John lived a crazy life in the desert, eating locusts, wearing camel hair clothes attracting people from all over to come hear the news about God’s Son. Then one day all his beliefs came to a screeching halt. John had doubts and questioned whether it was all a mistake? Maybe Jesus is not God. Maybe his whole life had been wrong.
